Hearse (English for hearse ) is a Swedish melodic death metal band formed in 2001 by singer Johan Liiva and drummer Max Thornell . The band has released five albums so far.

history

When Johan Liiva left the band NonExist , he and Max Thornell , with whom Liiva had already worked in the band Furbowl , decided to start a new project together. The two soon recruited guitarist Mattias Ljung , who hadn't played metal in a few years, and recorded a demo with him in 2001 . She aroused the interest of the Hammerheart Records label , which released their first single Torch in 2002 . The debut album Dominion Reptilian was released in March 2003. In the summer of 2003 Hearse began recording their second album Armageddon, Mon Amour , which was released in April 2004. This album features a cover version of the song Cambodia by Kim Wilde , which was also released on an EP in 2005, which also contains the songs from the 2001 demo and Torch . Hearse's third album, The Last Ordeal , was released in 2005 and the fourth, In These Veins , was released on Cold Records in 2006 . The fifth album, single Ticket to Paradise , was released in 2009 on Vic Records .

reception

The debut album Dominion Reptilian received rather negative to slightly positive reviews. While the web magazine Metal Observer wrote that “Hearse will be quickly forgotten and move on to something else” and gave it a rating of 4.5 out of 10 points, metal.de wrote with a rating of 7/10 that the album was “a lot good pieces and interesting approaches ”, but the big hit was not a success. Rouven Dorn expressed the opinion on Powermetal.de that after the very good first three songs the rest of the record was too similar and only mediocre. Dominion Reptilian is above average: "If you would like to go back to the beginning of the nineties and have nothing against a proper snotty-rock influence ... take it."

Armageddon, Mon Amour did better in the critics. Metal Observer now awarded 7.5 out of 10 points and spoke of "signs of progress and productivity". Metal.de praises a “battery of sleek songs” as well as the “mangy snotty vocals from Johan” and “absolutely convincing leads and solos from guitar Mattias, who clearly walks on Amott's path and dips each and every song into catchy tunes” and rated 9/10. Björn Backes was less convinced on powermetal.de and wrote that Hearse did not even begin to kick ass "as Michael Amott and Co. have always done", the CD went a little over time "despite its versatility the air out ”.

The Last Ordeal received little attention from the critics, while the following album In These Veins was well received. Oliver Schneider thought of In These Veins “Damn entertaining, the whole thing!” And said that the band couldn't be categorized stylistically. Although it is clearly Death Metal, due to influences from Hardcore Punk and Rock 'n' Roll it is not typical, while it is also too unpredictable to be called Death 'n' Roll .

In her review of the single Ticket To Paradise , Ricarda Schwoebel writes that Hearse's albums “quickly became an insider tip for rock fans who don't take everything so seriously” and emphasizes the “humorous undertones” with which they are often peppered. Single Ticket To Paradise is a solid album, "which can inspire with nice ideas and exuberant enthusiasm." A review in the online magazine Vampster , however, comes to the conclusion that Hearse, despite some good approaches, excellent guitar playing and the ability, "sometimes messy [ to] rock ”, often doesn't get right to the point and would take away the dynamics of some songs.
