The Heckinghauser Zollbrücke is a stone bridge built in 1775 over the Wupper in the Heckinghausen district of Wuppertal . It is the oldest preserved bridge in the city and now connects Lenneper Strasse with Rauental, near the mouth of the Murmelbach .
history
Already at the beginning of the 18th century there were plans to replace a previous wooden building with a stone bridge. But it wasn't until 1775 that two local families agreed to finance the construction. The three-arch bridge was prepared from grauwacke - rubble built and has a length of 32.5 meters and a width of 5.1 meters and a height of 4.1 meters above the river level. After completion, bridge tolls were levied from the numerous users .
The Wupper was the border between the Duchy of Berg and the County of Mark , so a customs office was set up at the bridge . It was used for road traffic until 1975, but was then closed to vehicles and is now only accessible to pedestrians.
