Hector F. DeLuca
Hector Floyd DeLuca (* 1930 ) is an American biochemist .
Live and act
De Luca grew up on a vegetable farm near Pueblo , Colorado . He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Colorado in 1951 and a Ph.D. from Harry Steenbock at the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1955. in biochemistry . In the same year, Steenbock retired and DeLuca took over his laboratory. In 1959 he received a first professorship (assistant professor) in the department of biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and in 1965 a full professorship there. Since then he has been researching there as Harry Steenbock Research Professor . From 1970 to 1986 and from 1991 to 2005 he held the chair for biochemistry there. In 2011 he retired .
DeLuca dealt with the role of physiologically active food components, in particular with the metabolism and the molecular mechanisms of action of fat-soluble vitamins . In this way, DeLuca was able to make a significant contribution to the elucidation of the vitamin D metabolism. His focus was on the clinical application of the results of basic research ( translational medicine ). He also dealt with mechanisms of cell differentiation .
