Ruins of the cathedral and the bishop's palace
This area consists of the Romanesque and Gothic cathedral ruins of Hamar , which are roofed with a glass building, and the ruins of the bishop's palace. The cathedral ruins were never desecrated and, according to canon law, still belong to the Catholic Church. Visitors can find out about the status of the work at an excavation site . Large parts of the city have not been excavated and visitors can visit a field outside the museum's boundaries.
open air museum
The ethnological museum shows the life of the Hedmark population from the 16th century to the early 20th century. The museum has large courtyards and individual buildings from all over the Hedmark region. These include large farms, small houses owned by land tenants and shepherds' houses that were used by shepherds during summer grazing. Many of the more than 65 different buildings have been restored to an earlier construction state. They show the different architectural styles in the municipalities of Hamar, Stange, Løten and Ringsaker. The museum also owns more than 50,000 objects, the oldest from the early 17th century.
Herb garden
The herb garden next to the Storhamarhof was laid out in 1985. There is an area with plants used in the Middle Ages, a section with newer crops and a special area with poisonous plants . The garden is the largest of its kind in Norway and cultivates over 400 different plants. In addition, 200 different varieties of fruit trees grow in the museum. They also serve to preserve old types of fruit.
