history
The Heerweg was mentioned as early as 1422, although it was not built on. Military routes in the Rhineland usually go back to very old routes, in this case a connection from Birkesdorf to Merzenich and on to Cologne . It appears for the first time in the 1893 address book, with a building belonging to the railway administration. In the city map from around 1903, the Heerweg connects the Birkesdorfer Cölnweg (today part of Akazienstraße) with Merzenich, with the Düren - Jülich and Düren - Cologne railway lines being crossed at ground level. The crossing of the Düren - Cologne railway line was later abandoned, dividing the Heerweg into two unconnected parts. The eastern section is still called Heerweg. The Heerweg is still marked in the city map from 1988 as a crossroad to the street Am Vorbahnhof . The section from the forest was later renamed Am Vorbahnhof .
