Ralph F. Hefferline (born February 15, 1910 in Muncie , Indiana , † March 16, 1974 ) was Professor of Psychology at Columbia University .

Hefferline wrote the first (the experimental part) of the book "Gestalt Therapy" (1951, published jointly with Fritz Perls and Paul Goodman ), with which the psychotherapeutic approach of the same name - Gestalt therapy - was founded.

Ralph F. Hefferline was an experimental psychologist, very close to the behaviorism of Burrhus Frederic Skinner and his students. Among other things, he made a transcript of a lecture by Skinner on his theory of linguistic behavior, which was often copied until the publication of Verbal Behavior . Hefferlein is one of the developers of biofeedback . The psychoanalysis (FM Alexander, Wilhelm Reich ) was one of his areas of interest.

Hefferline came in 1947 as a client to the Gestalt therapist Fritz Perls and then to the original group around the "New York Institute for Gestalt Therapy". However, after the publication of the book "Gestalttherapie" there was no further collaboration with Fritz Perls and Paul Goodman.
