Heiko Mertes (born July 14, 1947 in Essen ) is a former German football player and coach .

Career

Heiko Mertes learned to play football at SuS Harzopf. Then he played in the 1st amateur team of the Black and White Essen in the Verbandsliga. 1969 he joined the squad of the regional league team of the Black and White Essen. In this team he gained experience alongside fellow players Hermann Merchel , Rolf Kucharski , Michael Lameck , Holger Trimhold , Reinhard Majgl , and Heinz-Dieter Lömm . He played for the ETB until 1972 and then moved to Rot-Weiss Essen in the 2nd Bundesliga . Then, after 1 year at Rot-Weiss Essen, Heiko Mertes moved to 1. FC Mülheim in the 2. Bundesliga in July 1974 . After two successful years in Mülheim, he moved to Alemannia Aachen in 1975 in the 2nd Bundesliga until 1978. Then he moved to Hannover 96 , where he ended his football career in 1981 in the 2nd Bundesliga. He was only nine times in the DFB Cup . After his playing career, he made his coaching license and coached the club BV Altenessen 06 and his hometown club Schwarz-Weiß Essen for a long time, and the last coaching station he was at SSVg Velbert .
