Hermann Merchel (born February 22, 1937 ) is a former German soccer player .

Career

Merchel belonged to Schwarz-Weiß Essen as a goalkeeper, he started for the club in 1958/59 in the 2nd Oberliga West , ended his premiere season as runner-up behind Hamborn 07 and with this success in the Oberliga West , in one of five seasons as the highest German League, promotion. He was only able to enjoy this for one year for the time being, as he was the last of 16 clubs to relegate to the 2nd Oberliga West. From this he returned as a master in 1961 and together with Fortuna Düsseldorf in the upper house. The last two league seasons , before the Bundesliga was founded as the highest German division, he finished fourth and seventh with his team.

From 1963 to 1970 he played in the second-rate Regionalliga West . Placed thirteenth, ninth and seventh in the first three seasons, at the end of the 1966/67 season they now achieved second place, which allowed them to participate in the promotion to the Bundesliga . But he finished Group 1 with his team in second place, one point behind promoted Borussia Neunkirchen. In the following three seasons he and his team finished seventh, sixth and five, after which he moved to VfL Kray in the district league . After only one season he returned to Schwarz-Weiß Essen and ended his active football career at the end of the 1972/73 season .

For Schwarz-Weiß Essen he played 44 league games, seven promotion games and just as many in the DFB Cup competition.

The elimination game won 6: 3 at Hertha BSC on August 16, 1959 , reached the semi-finals, which on December 12 was sensationally won 2: 1 after extra time at Hamburger SV , which had not been defeated at home for three and a half years . He, who sustained a head injury in the 116th minute, was represented in goal by defender Karlheinz Mozin for the last four minutes . With the final, won 5-2 against Borussia Neunkirchen at the Kassel Auestadion on December 27th , he and his team achieved their greatest sporting success.

In 1966/67 he played three more DFB Cup games and in 1969/70 his last, which was lost on April 22, 1970 in the Uhlenkrug stadium at home with 1: 2 against Borussia Dortmund .
