history

Holy Spirit Church 1648

A Heilig-Geist-Hospital with church already existed in the 13th century in the city with municipal rights. It was the oldest in Danzig. At that time it was probably already on Heilige-Geist-Gasse between Ziegengasse and Karrmachergasse. The oldest mention of this location is from 1336 ( platea sancti spiriti , = alley to the Holy Spirit ). In 1357 the hospital was moved to Tobiasgasse, where it has existed since then. It was set up to accommodate the sick, orphans, widows and travelers. The hospital owned a few villages and lots and was one of the wealthiest social institutions in town.

In 1557 the hospital and church became Protestant. In 1840 both were closed and the hospital property was sold. The church was used by the new Old Lutheran congregation from around 1853. The hospital buildings became apartments.

In 1945 the tower and the western part of the church were badly damaged, the eastern part was largely preserved. The reconstruction took place from 1953 to 1957. The building is now part of a primary school ( Szkoła podstawowa ).

architecture

The core of the Heilig-Geist-Kirche is a late Gothic hall with a retracted choir . This is the original chapel from the late 14th century, to which the church was added in the early 15th century. Hardly anything has been preserved from the later alterations.

There are no more sacred objects in the interior, it is set up for use by the school.
