The old Holy Spirit Church on the Neisse

history

In 1905, the first Heilig-Geist-Kirche, also known as the Hospital Church, on the eastern bank of the Lusatian Neisse had to be demolished due to flood damage and a planned new bridge at this point. It was located in the immediate vicinity of the three-wheel mill and the wooden old town bridge, which was later replaced by a steel truss bridge. The old Lutheran congregation has held its services there since 1854.

As compensation, the parish received a piece of land from the Görlitz magistrate on today's Sattigplatz in the southern part of the city , east of the Catholic Church of St. Jakobus and south of the former railway company building. From the old church on the east bank of the Neisse, various parts of the baroque interior were taken over into the new building, including the pulpit altar, the baptismal font, the organ as well as the stalls and bell from 1772. There are two memorial plaques in the anteroom, one shows the relief image of the old church on the Neisse and the other represents the church history, which goes back to the year 1262.

The inscription on the southwest gable reads: " A solid castle is our God ". This motto is underlined by the castle-like character of the building. In the new church building, three styles are combined: the baroque interior, the neo-Romanesque body and a ceiling decoration and window grilles in Art Nouveau style .

The square central room of the church is flanked on both sides by narrow aisles and the load-bearing ceiling beams are decorated with Bible verses.
