Church building
Old building
After long efforts and under the most difficult conditions, this church building was built - almost exclusively by the parishioners themselves - from autumn 1966 to October 1968. Due to the political situation at the time, neither state building services nor building materials from the "population contingent" were allowed to be used. There were also a number of state requirements, including that no visible cross should be placed on the roof and that no tower was allowed to be built next to the church. Likewise, no massive building was approved, only a barrack building. After the political change in Germany, a wooden cross was erected in front of the church. The church was consecrated by Bishop Gerhard Schaffran .
New building
In 1997 the old barracks were demolished and a new, more modern church was built on the foundations of the old church. The pastor of the parish at the time, Clemens Paul, attached great importance to the fact that everything that could be preserved was preserved, e.g. B. the altar, the ambo , the two large altar windows and much more. This church is intended to be a tent for the people of God in which worship is celebrated. It was consecrated in 1997 by Bishop Rudolf Müller .
local community
The Catholics in Rauschwalde were looked after by the neighboring Jauernick pastor until 1918, and since the end of 1918 by the Görlitz parish of St. Jakobus. Church services were held monthly in the “Deutsches Haus” inn or in the Protestant community hall. In 1927 the St. Carolus Hospital was established. From then on, the Rauschwalder Catholics were allowed to worship there in the chapel of the sisters of St. Charles Borromeo . There, on White Sunday 1939, six boys and four girls went to Holy Communion for the first time . St. Hedwig had been an independent curate since 1914 . Pastor Alfred Göbel built up the first parish groups from 1944 onwards. In 1950 a barracks for the kindergarten and community hall was built. It was not until 1967 that Bishop Gerhard Schaffran laid the foundation stone for the parish's first barrack church. Due to the strict requirements of the socialist state of GDR , no state construction company was allowed to be commissioned with the construction. This suppression welded the community together. The own "Barackkirche" was mostly built in-house. There were countless missions after work and on the weekends.
Due to the drastic decline in the number of inhabitants in Görlitz, the Hedwigsgemeinde was dissolved with effect from December 31, 2009 by the then Görlitz Bishop Konrad Zdarsa . Together with the communities of St. Wenzeslaus (Jauernick) and St. Anna (Reichenbach), the new community of St. Hedwig and St. Wenzeslaus Görlitz-Jauernick was created. Due to its size, St. Hedwig's Church was named the parish church of the new community. St. Wenceslaus was elevated to a collegiate church.
On September 1st, 2012 the parish of St. Hedwig and St. Wenzeslaus Görlitz and Jauernick and the parishes of St. Jakobus Görlitz and Hl. Kreuz Görlitz were dissolved and the new parish of St. Wenceslas was created. From this point on, Hedwig's Church is a branch church of the community.
Furnishing
In the interior, the entire chancel with the altar , ambo and the base for the tabernacle was left in place during the renovation , so that it was taken over from the old church building. In the same way, the windows in the chancel and the side windows of the old church were built into the new church.
An altar window shows the life of St. Hedwig . The second window shows pictures of Jesus Christ .
cross
The cross in the interior is made of metal that has been painted with a varnish as if it had rusted. The body is made of green glass so that the light that shines in through the large rear window is refracted.
The cross outside was placed at an angle and points towards the church. Since the cross in the Way of the Cross is vertical on only two stations and is depicted at an angle on the other stations, the cross in front of the church was also placed in this position.
