history

The Franciscan Monastery

The monastery and a first church were founded and built between 1903 and 1905 by Franciscans of the Saxon Franciscan Province of Saxonia . After the Kulturkampf in Prussia, it was preceded by twelve years of negotiations with the Prussian Ministry of Culture for approval to found a monastery, which was granted on February 3, 1902. In Essen, the Franciscans wanted to focus on pastoral care for the Italian and Polish workers and their families in the city. First a chapel was built, which soon became too small for the increasing number of believers. In April 1929 the monastery became part of the re-established Cologne Franciscan Province of Colonia , which in 2010 merged with the other German provinces to form the German Franciscan Province of Germania . In 1965 a new house was built at the church in place of the old monastery, in which the Franciscans who work at the church now live.

Church building

In 1910 the foundation stone for the new larger church building was laid. On September 17, 1911, the new stone masonry church with neo-Romanesque decorative shapes was completed next to the monastery under the patronage of the Holy Cross . A year later the altar with the Sorrowful Mother was added. In 1915 the church was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Peter Joseph Lausberg . In 1931 the independent pastoral care area Heilig Kreuz was set up .

War damage and reconstruction

The church building suffered considerable damage in World War II . In 1943 a fire canister pierced the church roof and hit the organ stage, whereupon the organ caught fire and was destroyed. The entrance to the church was destroyed by bombing in 1945. Two years later, the first services could be held again in the provisional reconstruction. After the organ stage and the roof structure had been renewed in 1948, the slightly modified reconstruction was completed a year later. The inauguration of the organ followed in 1954. The altar and the newly furnished baptistery were consecrated in 1956, whereby the baptismal font and the tabernacle were designed by the Cologne sculptor Heribert Calleen . This was followed in 1971 by the renovation of the wooden ceiling, the installation of a new floor and new pews, and in 1986 a new saddle roof .
