Church Holy Family

The Holy Family Church in the Margarethenhöhe district of Essen is a house of worship rebuilt after the Second World War , which was ready for occupancy in 1952 and was consecrated in the winter of 1955 .

History and architecture

In 1923 the foundation stone for an emergency church was laid on Margarethenhöhe after the parish rectorate had been founded a year earlier . Its inauguration took place in 1924. Finally it was destroyed by bombing in 1944.

After the rectorate parish became a canonical parish in 1951 , the present church was built and assigned in 1952. It was built according to plans by the Essen architects Leo Fierenkothen and Heinz Funke. The consecration of the new church followed at the end of 1955 and the organ was consecrated in 1958.

The column-free church hall, constructed as a reinforced concrete framework, is located under an asymmetrical gable roof. The right sector is divided as a side aisle . The latter does not continue in the transverse rectangular choir. The liturgical area was slightly increased compared to the parish room, which was normal for churches of the way in the pre-conciliar period. The altar was placed on a suppedaneum , which was actually three steps higher. In 1996 the architect Franz-Josef Gierse set up a chapel for small church services under the organ gallery at the back. Right next to it is the confessional room. The place of baptism in front of the banks of the aisles is in the center of an octagonal floor star.

Since 2008, the Church of the Holy Family has belonged to the newly founded large parish of St. Antonius as a parish church . Today's organ was removed from the church of St. Stephanus in Holsterhausen , which was later abandoned , and installed in the Church of the Holy Family.
