History and description

Holy Pond in August 1940

At the site of today's Holy Pond, there was a pond as early as the 10th century , which was considered medicinal, from which the name of the current pond is derived. Abbess Hathui , daughter-in-law of Margrave Gero , healed and cared for the sick here. When Hathuis died in 1014, the water in the pond is said to have turned blood red, then bright green, until it finally returned to its normal color.

In 1745, Prince Viktor Friedrich had a device built to raise water in the Ostergrund. To enable the operation of the facility, the holy pond was created in 1746/47. However, the system proved to be uneconomical, so that it was closed again in 1749. However, the sacred pond was preserved.

The Selke Valley Railway was built in 1886/87. It crosses the pond on a stone viaduct , dividing it into a smaller western and a larger eastern part.

On a tree on the north-eastern bank of the pond there is a sign explaining the history of the pond.
