Hathui
Hathui , also Hadwig , (* around 939; † July 4, 1014 ) was the first abbess of the Gernrode monastery on the northern edge of the Harz in Swabia .
Life
Hathui's parents were Count Wichmann I (* around 900; † 23 April 944?) And a sister of Queen Mathilde who had not yet been identified . Bia and Friderun were excluded from the research and a Perechtheid was presented as a possible wife of Wichmann. Hathui had at least two siblings: Wichmann II (* around 930; † 22 September 967) and Ekbert the one-eyed (* around 932; † April 994). It is possible that Bishop Brun I of Verden was one of her brothers.
In 952 Hathui married the son of Margrave Gero , Siegfried, who was in royal favor, but who died on June 24th before or exactly in 959 or 961. Immediately after the death of her husband, Hathui took the veil and, at the request of her father-in-law, Otto I appointed her abbess to the Gernrode monastery. Gero's second son Gero had also died in 959, so the margravial property was transferred to the monastery. Pope John XII confirmed the establishment and placed the pen under papal protection. Hathui was consecrated in 962 by the Halberstadt bishop Bernhard von Hadmersleben . She headed the monastery for 55 years. Hathui also held the office of abbess in Vreden Abbey , where with Wichmann III. her nephew exercised the bailiff's rights.
Legend
Hathui is said to have cared for and healed the sick at the Heiligen Teich south of Gernrode. After her death in 1014, the water in the pond first turned blood red and then bright green, until it returned to its normal color.
