Holy Spirit Church (Calheta)
The Holy Spirit Church ( Portuguese Igreja Matriz do Espírito Santo , Igreja Matriz da Calheta ) is the parish church (port. Igreja Matriz , literally: Mother Church) of the community Calheta on the island of Madeira . It is consecrated to the Holy Spirit . The patronage is celebrated on Pentecost .
The sacred building has been a listed building since 1977.
History and equipment
It is a mid-16th century building with features of the Manueline and Mannerist styles. The church underwent a rebuilding process in 1639. It houses a rich artistic and religious treasure, e. B. the sacral made of ebony with silver details (a gift from King D. Manuel I. ), The Manueline cross processional and a Flemish triptych from the XVI. Century, which is now in the Museum of Sacred Art in Funchal.
