Heinrich Balcz

Heinrich Balcz (born June 17, 1898 in Vienna , † 1944 in Yugoslavia ) was an Austrian Egyptologist .

Life

Balcz studied Egyptology at the University of Vienna and received his doctorate in 1925 under Hermann Junker . Then he was his assistant at the University of Vienna. In 1931/32 he was a research assistant at the Cairo department of the German Archaeological Institute . He then worked as a university assistant at the University of Vienna, where he completed his habilitation in 1934 and was appointed extraordinary professor in May 1940. Balcz took part in the excavations of Merimde , Hermopolis Magna and Thebes . In 1938 he published the monthly archive for Egyptian archeology with Egon von Komorzynski , but it was only published for one year. In 1942 he was drafted into the war and fell in 1944.
