Heinrich Berlin

Heinrich Berlin Neubart (also Enrique Berlín) (born November 13, 1915 in Fürth / Bavaria, † May 6, 1988 in Mexico City ) was a historian , anthropologist and archaeologist who worked in Mexico and Guatemala .

Life

Heinrich Berlin graduated from the Hardenberg-Gymnasium in Fürth and emigrated to Mexico with his parents in 1935 as persecuted Jews. There he studied at the Philosophical Faculty of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) until 1939 , did his master's degree in 1942 and received his doctorate in 1947 in ethnology .

From 1938 to 1945 he worked at the Palenque excavation , and it is from this period that his first articles on Maya archeology and Spanish colonial art come from. He wrote few books, but all the more articles or essays alongside translations from English or German and reviews.

He was also interested in the neighboring country of Guatemala , where he was appointed Research Associate at the Museo Nacional de Guatemala and Professor at the Instituto de Antropología e Historia (Institute for Ethnology and History) at the Universidad de San Carlos in 1950. In 1953 he retired.
