Heinrich Bernhard Rupp

Heinrich Bernhard Rupp (Ruppe) (born August 22, 1688 in Gießen , † March 7, 1719 in Jena ) was a German botanist. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Ruppius ".

Life

Rupp also called himself Ruppius , with a Latinized form of name, as was common in his time. From 1704 he studied medicine in Giessen . Already at that time he met the botanist Dillenius . From 1711 he studied at the University of Jena , from 1712 in Leiden and 1713 again in Jena.

Rupp wrote a Flora von Jena ( Flora Jenensis ... ), in which flowering plants and lower plants are treated. Its flora covered large parts of Thuringia as far as the Harz foreland . As a medical student, Rupp had forbidden to hold lectures on botany in Jena that were much better than those of the then professor Johann Adrian Slevogt . When the latter tried to obtain the manuscript to prevent publication, Rupp sold the manuscript of his Flora to his fellow student Johann Heinrich Schütte in 1717 , who added German plant names and had the flora printed in 1718. Rupp wrote a second edition, but it did not appear until after his death (1726). A third edition followed in 1745 and was edited by Albrecht von Haller .

Honors

In honor of Rupp, Carl von Linné named the plant genus the Salden as Ruppia (family Ruppiaceae - Saldengewächse).
