Heinrich Bolau

Cornelius Karl Heinrich Bolau (born September 17, 1836 in Hamburg ; † May 25, 1920 ibid) was a German zoologist and zoo director in Hamburg.

Life

Heinrich Bolau was born on September 17, 1836 in Hamburg as the son of a coppersmith. He studied in Giessen, Heidelberg, Munich and Berlin and obtained his doctorate in 1866 in Göttingen with a "contribution to the knowledge of amphibian skin". phil. After previously teaching at the Johanneum High School , Bolau became director of the Hamburg Zoo on October 14, 1875 . On May 1, 1909, he retired. His son Hermann Bolau , born in 1871 , also became a zoologist and later director of the Düsseldorf Zoological Garden. Bolau was temporarily also chairman of the administrative commission of the Natural History Museum . Bolau was also involved in the " Natural Science Association of Hamburg " and was its chairman several times. In 1891 Heinrich Bolau was appointed a member of the Leopoldina . He died on May 25, 1920 in Hamburg.
