General plan

Brupbacher was best known for his engravings of numerous villages on Lake Zurich . The work “Lake Zurich with all its advances in its completely natural position” appeared in 1794 and was created between 1790 and 1793. The client and publisher was the trained Zurich bookbinder and publisher Johannes Hofmeister (1721–1806). With its 34 pictures, the work was the first series of views of the villages and estates around Lake Zurich.

The views next to Brupbacher were drawn by Heinrich Thomann (1748–1794), a view of Küsnacht and the two sheets of Wädenswil come from him . Hofmeister himself drew the view of the narrowness . No other artist is known by name.

All views have in common the point of view: Even if the draftsman allowed himself to be rowed along the bank, the villages are drawn roughly from the height of a modern passenger ship; a trick that was often used.

21 of the 34 sheets were engraved by Heinrich Brupbacher; the names of the other engravers are not known. The title page was the overview map that Brupbacher drew and engraved in 1793 based on a template by Hans Conrad Gyger ; «An interesting new map really nicely done».

All sheets are described uniformly, using Zollikon as an example : “Le Village de Zollikon. Au Bord du Lac de Zurich avec Ses Environs Vers L'orient dessine d'après la Nature. Cura (= editorship) Hofmeister, H. Brupbacher sculp. (= stabbed it) »
