After the early death of his father, at the age of 20, he took over the family's distillery and farm in Damme. Like his father, he was also actively involved in local and state politics. In 1911 he fell out with his party and in a bitter election campaign won the constituency as an independent candidate, which he represented in the state parliament until 1919. After the November Revolution he was elected to the 1st Oldenburg State Parliament on February 23, 1919. The 1st Landtag was the constituent state assembly. After the state constitution was passed, a new state parliament was elected on June 6, 1920. In the new elections of 1920 he decided not to run again. His successor was Franz Meyer .
