from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Heinrich Harms (born June 23, 1861 in Brackrade (today in Bosau ); † July 30 or 31, 1933 in Hanover ) was a geographer and teacher and is considered the old master of school geography.

Life

The father of August Heinrich Christian Harms was August Christian Harms (1834-1911), a servant and workman. All other ancestors of Heinrich Harms were simple village craftsmen, blacksmiths or master shoemakers. The oldest proven ancestor in Brackrade, the blacksmith Andreas Harms, married in 1714 and probably comes from Tönning.

Heinrich Harms attended the two-class village school between Brackrade and Hutzfeld. The school was used jointly by the two villages and was only a few hundred meters away from his parents' house. After graduating there, Heinrich Harms received a scholarship and attended the teachers' seminar in Oldenburg zu Oldenburg (1877–1881). After his training, he worked as a teacher at the one-class village school in Dörnick, Plön district. He worked at this school for 23 years and created his first works there.

Due to illness, he retired at the age of 43 and moved to Plön. There he worked as a geographer, cartographer and writer for around 20 years.

Act

The name Heinrich Harms stands for excellent works on geography. Harms has accompanied generations of students through their lessons with his works. In his textbooks, he explains in detail the geography of the individual countries as well as the climate, flora and fauna. Pictures, maps, sketches and comparative tables provide additional and interesting insights.

Heinrich Harms coined the saying “No one can stand to be asked continuously, to be constantly squeezed, to continuously produce mentally; he also wants to be able to hear and look. "(quoted from H. FUCHS 1929, p. 216)

Heinrich Harms is the namesake of some schools, such as B. the Heinrich Harms Realschule in Bosau or the Heinrich Harms School in Dörnick . Harms also worked here as a village teacher for many years. This school is now closed and the secondary school in Plön has taken the name.
