Heinrich Johannes Friedrich Herner (born February 1, 1870 in Hanover ; † December 11, 1958 in Eschwege ) was a German naval engineer and professor whose main focus was on ship design.

Life

Herner was born in Hanover in 1870 and after graduating from high school and doing an internship at the Kaiserliche Werft in Kiel, studied shipbuilding at the Technical University of Berlin-Charlottenburg . After graduating in 1898, he first worked as a designer at various shipyards in Northern Germany and in Riga and then started again at the Imperial Shipyard in Kiel, where he was soon appointed chief engineer.

In April 1904, Herner took up a position as senior teacher at the higher ship and mechanical engineering school in Kiel. In 1906 Herner published a paper on the appraisal of ships and two years later he published his best-known book, Theory of the Ship , which was re-published in 1939 and 1943, initially in revisions by Karl Rusch and then in 1952 and for the last time in 1954 in revisions by Rudolf Verhovsek . In 1909 he published the title Design and Furnishing of Merchant Ships and in 1910 the compact book on Shipbuilding . These titles have also been revised and reissued several times. In addition to teaching at the shipbuilding and mechanical engineering school, Herner earned his doctorate in philosophy in 1919 on the subject of port taxes and ship surveying at Christian Albrechts University . As early as 1913, Herner had given a much-discussed lecture to the Shipbuilding Society on the subject . In addition to his teaching activities, Herner oversaw the official ship surveying in Kiel for many years . In 1932, Herner retired to pursue his diverse interests. In addition to writing books, Herne worked for years as an author and later in the editorial team of the specialist journal Schiffbau . He retired from this position in 1938. In 1938, however, he made himself available as a shipbuilding teacher for the Navy in Flensburg-Mürwik and was appointed professor due to his extraordinarily extensive teaching activities in the fields of shipbuilding as well as economics and business administration.

Herner died on December 11, 1958 after a long illness in Eschwege.
