Heinrich Johann Wilhelm Bentinck
Sir Hendrik Willem Johan (Henry John William) Count Bentinck KCB (born September 8, 1796 in Varel , † September 29, 1878 in London ) was a British general.
resume
He was born the son of Major General John Charles Bentinck (1763-1833) and married in 1829 the daughter of Admiral Sir James Hawkins Whitshed . From 1854 to 1878 he was regiment chief of the 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot. In the Crimean War he led the Guards Brigade . He also commanded them in the Battle of Balaklava .
In 1856/1857 he was a member of a commission to investigate the practice of buying offices in the British armed forces . The commission was not originally set up with the aim of ending the practice of buying officers 'posts, but nevertheless came to the conclusion that buying officers' posts was contrary to military efficiency. Even so, this system would be preferred in the officer corps , and military reform would also cost £ 8 million. It would have to suffice to insert stricter checks on the appointment to lieutenant .
