Eselsburg Tower

The Eselsburg Tower is a lookout tower on Eselsberg near Ensingen , a district of Vaihingen an der Enz in the northwest of the Ludwigsburg district in Baden-Württemberg . Its name is derived from the castle of the Lords of Eselsberg , which once stood on Eselsberg.

Location and view

The Eselsburg Tower stands at 392.4  m above sea level. NHN high Eselsberg on the southern edge of the Stromberg and can be reached from Ensingen from the parking lot at the cemetery via an approximately 2 km long hiking trail through the vineyard and forest. From the tower you have a view to the south and east over the district of Ludwigsburg to Stuttgart , to the south-west to the northern Black Forest with Pforzheim and to the west to the Kraichgau near Bretten .

The Eselsberg Tower was built in 1925 by the Swabian Alb Association , which still operates it. It is 18.2 meters high and designed as a paneled wooden structure on a stone base. On the north side five broad sandstone steps lead to the entrance door, inside there is a wooden staircase with 75 steps over four intermediate levels to the viewing platform at a height of 14.5 meters. The window openings of the platform, to which orientation boards are attached on each side, can be closed from the inside with wide folding shutters.

Tower and restaurant are open on Sundays and public holidays. At the foot of the tower there is a shelter and a playground.
