Life

Heinrich Kralik von Meyrswalden was the great-grandson of the glass industrialist Wilhelm Kralik von Meyrswalden , who was ennobled in 1877 . His mother came from a Huguenot family. At the age of five he was orphaned by his uncle, the estate manager Grandjean, at the Mumm von Schwarzenstein winery near Rüdesheim .

In 1913 the uncle gave in to the 16-year-old's wish to begin training as a naval officer as a cabin boy. On a sailing freighter, the four-masted barque “Lisbeth”, von Meyrswalden experienced the outbreak of the First World War . His ship was interned and sealed off the coast of Chile by the British. Since the health of the entire crew deteriorated, he fled the ship, was able to swim to the country and found a German landowner in the south of Chile to take him and work. He only returned to his homeland in 1920. After a short stay at the Hohenheim Agricultural University , he switched to the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart and completed a degree. His professors were Eckener, Speyer, Christian Landenberger and Heinrich Altherr . Von Meyrswalden was friends with Paul Kälberer . At the academy he also met his future wife, the art student Marianne Abele. After completing their studies, they both went to Chile and married there in 1924.

In Chile, he created brightly colored pictures of the jungle and flowers from the Cordilleras , some of which he roamed alone on horseback for weeks. As the birth of his first child was announced, he and his wife returned to Stuttgart in 1925. His artistic activities were not limited to painting. In addition to the exhibitions, as in the Heilbronner Kunstverein, he also made public appearances as a singer. With choirs, including the Swabian Singing Circle (Wirsching) Stuttgart, (Krischkat) and the Esslinger Singekreis Bornefeld.

Assigned to the Reich Labor Service, he went to Russia as a painter from 1942. The pictures he took there earned him wall-filling government contracts, the preparation of which was interrupted when he was called up for the last military contingent. Exhibitions in Berlin, Munich and Prague followed. At the end of the war, Kralik von Meyrswalden was a member of a medical unit. After the collapse and denazification , his work was no longer recognized. His marriage also got into an increasing crisis, as a result of which he withdrew to his workshop in Esslingen. To overcome his professional and emotional stagnation, he turned to sacred art. To redesign a church, he designed ceiling paintings and wall frescoes. He worked on interior architectural church interior design and spent months studying the art of lead glazing. Church windows were made in Traunstein , Upper Bavaria .

His interest in portrait painting also grew again. Together with an artist from Munich, he worked on a huge mosaic for the mechanical engineering school in Esslingen. Kralik von Meyrswalden was killed in an accident on May 25, 1958.
