Kamp-Bornhofen with the "Enemy Brothers"

Oil painting "The hostile brothers near Bornhofen am Rhein with monastery and village view" by the 21-year-old Karl Bodmer . Around 1830, privately owned. The picture shows the former Capuchin monastery with the pilgrimage church of Bornhofen, a procession, the Rhine and the castles Sterrenberg and Liebenstein . Since Sterrenberg Castle had belonged to the Electoral Trier district since 1320 , it was strongly fortified against the nearby Liebenstein Castle; this later led to the legend of the enemy brothers.

Kamp-Bornhofen is a municipality in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley in the Rhein-Lahn district in Rhineland-Palatinate . It belongs to the Loreley community . Well-known buildings are the Enemy Brothers and the Bornhofen pilgrimage monastery .

Kamp-Bornhofen is located on the Rhine in the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley .

history

Bornhofen was first mentioned in documents in 949, the district of Kamp in the 11th century as "Cambo". In the early 11th century, Emperor Konrad II transferred a “Hof zu Kamp” to the canons of Limburg an der Lahn . The Marien-Pilgrimage Monastery Bornhofen has existed since 1224.

When the neighboring free imperial city of Boppard lost its imperial immediacy in 1327 and was pledged by King Henry VII to his brother, Archbishop Baldwin of Trier , the place also came to the electorate due to its affiliation to the Boppard Empire , which it until Napoleon's invasion as part of the Boppard office remained. After the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss 1803 and the associated dissolution of spiritual areas - including Kurtrier - Kamp came to the newly founded Duchy of Nassau . After the Congress of Vienna , the place finally came to Nassau , which in turn was annexed by Prussia in 1866 .

On March 25, 1945 the place was occupied by American troops. After the war, Kamp belonged to the French occupation zone .

It was not until 1936 that the name change from Camp to Kamp (official spelling 1939 Kamp (Rhine) ). The place has been part of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate since 1947 . In 1948 the municipal council applied for the name to be changed to Kamp-Bornhofen , and in 1949 an application for town charter was rejected.

The community belonged to the Braubach community from 1972 to 2012 , and since then it has been part of the Loreley community. Furthermore, Kamp was part of the Loreley district until 1969 and has been part of the Rhein-Lahn district since then.

The local mayor of Kamp-Bornhofen has been Frank Kalkofen (SPD) since 2006. In the direct election on May 26, 2019, he was re-elected with 81.90% of the vote. Kalkofen was succeeded by Roger Lewentz , who held the position from 1994 to 2006.

The blazon of the coat of arms reads: "Under a silver shield head with a blue oblique left stream, on the right in gold a lowered blue anchor, on the left in blue a silver lily". It was approved in 1949.

In February 2018 Kamp-Bornhofen became the seat of the newly founded Roman Catholic parish "Saint Elisabeth von Schönau " in the Diocese of Limburg , to which the ten formerly independent parishes of St. Martin ( Osterspai ), St. Margaretha ( Filsen ) and St. Nikolaus became (Kamp-Bornhofen), St. Jakobus the Elder ( Dahlheim ), St. Georg ( Kestert ), St. Martin ( Wellmich ), St. John the Baptist ( St. Goarshausen ), St. Nikolaus ( Kaub ), St. Peter and Paul ( Naststätten ) and St. Florin ( Strüth ) have merged. The new parish looks after around 8100 Catholics.

Culture and sights

Katzenelnbogen

In 1194 vineyards are attested as fiefdoms of the Counts von Katzenelnbogen owned by Konrad Wolf in Kamp. The donor picture of the Kamp-Bornhofener winged altar, created in 1435 and now in the Rheinisches Landesmuseum Bonn , shows the only natural image of a Count of Katzenelnbogen, Count Philip the Elder of Katzenelnbogen .

Museums

The Flösser- und Schiffermuseum has existed since 1968 and shows exhibits from the rafting and steamship industry . The museum is sponsored by the Flösser- und Schifferverein Kamp-Bornhofen eV, founded in 1888 . V.

Attractions

Liebenstein Castle and Sterrenberg Castle , called Enemy Brothers , are located directly on the right bank of the Rhine above Bornhofen. Sterrenberg, the more northerly of the two plants, was built in the 11th century. The younger Liebenstein Castle was only built between 1284 and 1290, possibly initially as a Vorwerk zu Sterrenberg.

There is a legend that here two brothers fought with their swords for the love of a woman. Heinrich Heine set a literary monument to the two brothers in his poem Two Brothers . The Franziskanerkloster Bornhofen with Marien's pilgrimage church is visited annually by around 200,000 pilgrims, including the participants in a ship procession, for which Guido Görres wrote the famous pilgrimage song Escort through the wave faithfully and gently , which Caspar Aiblinger set to music. The Marienkirche was first mentioned in a document in 1224. Today's two-aisled pilgrimage church was built between around 1400 and 1435. Special pieces of equipment are the portrait of Mary from the 15th century and the marble high altar built in 1765. The Franciscans have been running the monastery since 1890.

Castle hiking trail and Rheinsteig . One of the few open-air swimming pools in the Middle Rhine Valley is located in Kamp-Bornhofen.
