Life

Heinrich August Friedrich Kreplin was the eldest son of the Anklam farmer Karl Friedrich Kreplin (1805–1846) and his wife Augusta Sophia Friederica Schmidt (1815–1880). His brother Wilhelm (1837–1912) became a businessman and senator in Treptow . His eldest daughter Hedwig married Ernst Karstadt, the brother of Rudolph Karstadt .

Heinrich Kreplin attended grammar school in Anklam from 1847 to 1853 . He then studied at the University of Greifswald and was one of the founding members of the Rugia fraternity there in 1856 . His teachers included Johann August Grunert and the academic builder Gustav Emil Benedict Müller.

Kreplin met Emil Odebrecht and Gustav Mellenthin in Greifswald , with whom he emigrated to Blumenau in Brazil in autumn 1856 . Here he worked as a geodesist and cartographer. From 1864 to 1866 Odebrecht and Kreplin led the first expedition to the upper reaches of the Rio Itajaí .

During a stay in Germany, Kreplin created an “overview map of German settlements in the province of Santa Catharina in Brazil”, which was published in 1867 by J. Köhler in Hamburg. When he returned to Brazil, he was in charge of the survey of the public lands in the province of Santa Catarina from 1866 to 1868. Around 1870 he ran a department store in the provincial capital of Desterro , which he soon sold again to move to Argentina in 1872. Here Kreplin was 1874/1875 professor of physics, topography and geometrical descriptions at the National College in Catamarca .

After spending three years in Germany, Kreplin went back to Brazil, where he became director and surveyor of the Luis Alves settlement. In 1882 he went again with his friend Odebrecht on various expeditions to the Brazilian-Argentine border. Only after the deposition of Emperor Pedro II did he leave Brazil for good, worked again briefly as a professor in Argentina in 1891, before finally returning to his homeland in Anklam.
