In 1853 he was appointed to a managerial position in the national library (manuscript department). In Paris he was a resident member of the Société nationale des antiquaires de France (1853–1885), a member of the Comité des travaux historiques et scientifiques (1865–1873) and president of the Société des anciens textes français, founded in 1875.
