Heinrich Oelerich

Heinrich Bernhard Oelerich (born February 5, 1877 in Hamme (Bochum) , † March 23, 1953 in Freising in Upper Bavaria) was a German aircraft designer.

Life

Heinrich Bernhard Oelerich was born on February 5, 1877, the son of the carpenter Heinrich Oelerich and his wife Maria, née Steinborn, in their parents' apartment in Hamme, Bochum district.

After his apprenticeship as a locksmith, he worked in engine construction and was an active motor sportsman.

After he had received the German pilot certificate No. 37 on October 21, 1910 in Berlin-Johannisthal on a Schultze-Herfort monoplane, he undertook sightseeing flights in England, France, Portugal and South America.

He then joined the Deutsche Flugzeug-Werke (DFW) in Lindenthal as chief pilot . Here he broke several records, for example a continuous flight of 2 hours 41 minutes with two passengers on July 5, 1912, a continuous flight of 6 hours 8 minutes on July 8, 1913 and a world altitude record of 8,000 m on July 14, 1914.

During the First World War he was a DFW works pilot, designer and technical director, was involved with Hermann Dorner in the design of the DFW B types and the DFW CV and took part in the work on the development of the R-aircraft (giant aircraft). In 1918 he crashed while testing the four-engine R XV and from then on was severely handicapped.

After the First World War he ran a repair shop in Leipzig. After it was bombed out there in World War II, he moved to Freising.
