Heinrich Weber (born May 2, 1875 in Mülheim am Rhein , † 1958 in Berlin ) was a German wrestler .

Career

Heinrich Weber was a wrestling pioneer from before the First World War . He grew up in Mülheim am Rhein, which was later incorporated into Cologne , and began wrestling as a teenager at the Mülheim Athlete's Club in 1892 after seeing the then famous Hamburg heavy athlete Karl Abs wrestle in Cologne. Since Cologne was a center of wrestling at that time, he had good training partners and soon belonged to the German wrestling elite. At that time the wrestling was exclusively in the Greco-Roman style. As an amateur, Heinrich Weber became German champion in Duisburg in 1899 , after finishing second in 1897. Back then there was only one weight class in which all participants had to start. In 1900 Heinrich Weber became a professional wrestler. At a time when professional wrestling was in full bloom and thousands of visitors came to the major tournaments. He competed in many tournaments for over 20 years, some of which he finished as winners. In 1903 he became world champion in the meanwhile introduced lightweight and in 1909 vice world champion in heavyweight behind the famous Russian wrestler Iwan Poddubny , in whose honor a large international wrestling tournament is still held in Russia today . He also worked as a trainer. One of his most famous students was the future world champion Stanislaus Zbyszko from Poland . Before 1914 Heinrich Weber also stayed in the United States, but did not have any major fights there because the "cracks" there avoided him.

After the end of his wrestling career, Heinrich Weber acted as an organizer of professional wrestling tournaments, but died completely impoverished in 1958 in Berlin .
