Heinrich the Elder , also Henry de Medlich (* 1158 , † 11. September 1223 ) from a family than today Babenberger are known, one of the two sons was the Marquis and later Duke Henry II. , Of Austria from his second Married to Theodora Komnena , a niece of the Byzantine emperor Manuel I. He was the younger brother of Leopold V, Duke of Austria and Styria . To distinguish it from his son of the same name, he is usually referred to in research as Heinrich the Elder.

Life

Heinrich the Elder had received the rule of Mödling from his brother Leopold, who had already been enfeoffed with the Duchy of Austria during his father's lifetime. It was one of the oldest possessions of his family and experienced a great boom under him. He also called himself Duke. Mödling Castle was built under him , where he held his own court. Despite his high reputation, however, he never competed with his brother.

Heinrich the Elder founded a branch line of the Babenbergs.

He was buried in the burial place of the Babenbergs in the chapter house of Heiligenkreuz Abbey .

He was married to Richza (also Richsa or Raitza) († 1182 ), a daughter of the Bohemian King Vladislav II from his 2nd marriage to Judith of Thuringia .
