Heinrich von Arx (born September 12, 1802 in Bern , † January 30, 1858 ibid) was a Swiss painter, editor of humorous papers, draftsman and liberal caricaturist.

Life

Heinrich von Arx was born on September 12, 1802 in Bern, according to another source in Olten , as the son of the Olten shoemaker Heinrich von Arx. At first he intended to complete a medical degree, but soon switched to an artistic activity. There are no sources for artistic training. A lesson is being discussed by my friend Martin Disteli , who is also from Olten . After a few attempts at oil painting, he turned to drawing and especially to political caricature. He preferred lithography as a medium . From 1836 he was Frank Buchser's first drawing teacher . Heinrich von Arx worked from 1838 for the New Bern Calendar , published by Jeremias Gotthelf , then from 1840 to the beginning of the 1850s for the humorous and satirical feature section Der Gukkasten , of which he was co-editor. He also worked as an editor and as a draftsman from 1845 for the Solothurn Postheiri . Some of his caricatures were also published in the Fliegende B Blätter in Munich. In 1849 he created illustrations for Adrian von Arx's fantasies in Bern's Kornhauskeller . From 1851 to 1852 he drew for the Swiss Charivari published by Arthur Bitter . Heinrich von Arx went blind in the last years of his life and died completely penniless on January 30, 1858 in Bern.

In his obituary in the Berner Zeitung of March 1858, his artistic talent is recognized, which unfortunately was opposed by a certain phlegmatic cynicism.
