Heinrich von Ramstein

Heinrich von Ramstein (* before 1230; † July 22, 1318 ) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery of St. Gallen from 1301 to 1318.

Life

Heinrich von Ramstein was not demonstrably related to his predecessor Rumo von Ramstein or the abbot of the Reichenau monastery, Albrecht von Ramstein . He is likely to be one of four Heinrichen who were among the St. Gallen members of the convent with voting rights in 1270. His full name was first mentioned in 1275. He was one of four monks who had stood by Rumo. From 1278 he appears as a porter. In 1287 he and two other monks filed a complaint with King Rudolf against Abbot Wilhelm.

On October 11, 1301 he was elected abbot. The choice is considered ambivalent, as he was at odds with his opponent Ulrich von Trauchburg and had to accept income from him. Heinrich also won the intercession of the Bishop of Constance by leaving Wurmlingen to him. The abbot consecration took place in St. Georg in Stein am Rhein.

On December 7, 1301, Heinrich was given the regalia by King Albrecht , but the Reichsvogtei were refused to pledge . One of the main reasons for this was the resistance of the St. Gallen citizens.

He fell ill in the middle of 1316 and died two years later at the age of 90.

Act

As an abbot, Heinrich von Ramstein also met with resistance in all his efforts. He tried to pay off the inherited debts with two different measures. The first was to sell monastery property. The second led to opposition from the church population: he imposed rigorous taxes. The resistance was so great that he had to appoint his brother Diethelm to the abbey for three years - also because the conventuals urged him to do so.

Another problem was the rebuilding of Wil, which Heinrich sought, but was refused to him by Albrecht - together with the demolition of Schwarzenbach -, u. a. because the king claimed the bailiwick over Wil. The death of the king did not resolve the issue, and King Henry VII did not respond to Abbot Henry's wishes either. After all, on April 17, 1309, he confirmed the older freedoms.

He managed, however, that on May 1, 1310, the Bailiwick of Wil was returned, and on April 22, 1311 that the repayment of the deposit of 1,300 marks that had been agreed with Adolf von Nassau was regulated. But on October 23, 1314, the city and the monastery were ravaged by a devastating fire, whereupon Abbot Heinrich Provost Heinrich von Lupfen and the city citizen Konrad Kuchimeister had to commission the rebuilding of the monastery.
