Heinrich von Werl (* around 1400 in Werl ; † April 10, 1463 in Osnabrück ) was the 16th Provincial of the Cologne Province of the Minorites .

Life

Heinrich entered the Franciscan order. Before 1430 he received in- depth theological training in a Studium generale . While studying theology, he was granted a master's degree and the first of the three levels of the baccalaureate . In 1430 he was enrolled at the University of Cologne. In 1432 he was appointed provincial of the local order province and received his doctorate in 1434. In the matriculation list of the University of Cologne from 1430 you can find the following entry Frater Henricus de Weerle, O. Min s. Theology . The matriculation kept him as professor of theology until his death. Heinrich was provincial until 1462, his province comprised the Cologne Province of the Minorites and seven custodians with a total of 51 convents. At the General Chapter in Padua in 1443, reform in Germany was particularly recommended to him. Heinrich was a participant in the Council of Basel in the 1430s . There he represented the party of Pope Eugene IV through the polemic From papal power over the whole church . The Archbishop of Cologne, Dietrich von Moers, was of the opposite opinion. Another of his treatises was the writing on the Immaculate Conception of Mary . His evidence for his claims was drawn from the sayings of canonical and theological authors, the provisions of canon law, and scripture. Instead of applause at the council, he received lively criticism for this treatise. It is not certain whether he continued to take part after the council was moved. Furthermore, his comments on the sentences of Petrus Lombardus and explanations on various biblical books are known. Along with Johann von Werden and Johann von Minden, Heinrich was the third great preacher of his time. Trithemius called him divini verbi praedicator egregius (Outstanding Herald of the Divine Word).

Heinrich von Werl died a year after he had given up his post as provincial superior in the convent in Osnabrück.
