Sophronius Clasen

Sophronius Clasen OFM (born May 30, 1909 in Mönchengladbach as Anton Clasen ; † April 21, 1974 ibid) was a German Franciscan , theologian , church historian and philosopher .

Training, research and teaching

Anton Clasen began his novitiate as a Franciscan in Warendorf in 1929 and received the religious name Sophronius . He took his religious vows in 1932 in Mönchengladbach in 1932; at the religious college there he studied theology . In 1934 he was ordained a priest. After studying in Rome , he was in 1937 with a thesis on the St. Bonaventure and Mendikantenstreit at the Pontifical Gregorian University for Dr. theol. and returned to the university in Mönchengladbach to teach patrology , church history and the history of the Franciscan order. During the Second World War he worked briefly as a pastor in Trier .

After the war, the provincial leadership of the Cologne Franciscan Province of Colonia viewed the resumption of teaching in Mönchengladbach with skepticism. By rejecting these subjects, Kajetan Eßer finally made it possible for Clasen to take over the history of orders and provinces again. At the University of Cologne doctorate Clasen 1950 for Dr. phil. with a thesis on the history of the theological faculty. From 1968 he was a lecturer , from 1970 honorary professor at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn .

Sophronius Clasen was an outstanding expert on the history of the Franciscan order as well as the theology of the 13th century and a specialist in the life and work of St. Bonaventure. Until his death he was chief editor and co-editor of the Franciscan religious journal Science and Wisdom .
