Heinz Schmidkunz (born October 3, 1929 in Graslitz ; † April 1, 2012 ) was a German chemistry teacher and professor at the TU Dortmund . He was one of the most famous German chemistry teachers.

life and work

Schmidkunz received his doctorate from the University of Frankfurt in 1963 and was then a professor there from 1964 to 1966. In 1966 he became a full professor at the Pädagogische Hochschule Ruhr and in 1980 at the University of Dortmund. From 1983 to 1989 he was dean of the chemistry department. From 1990 to 1994 he was chairman of the convention of the University of Dortmund.

He tried to incorporate perceptual psychological findings (gestalt theory) in chemistry didactics in demonstration experiments. Furthermore, he dealt with learning on the screen, teaching research, research-based chemistry lessons, didactic treatment of circular processes, energy in chemical reactions and spontaneous endothermic reactions. In 1973 he headed the technical upper level model test in Ludwigshafen and otherwise worked closely with the Association of the Chemical Industry . For example, he trained continuing education teachers in seminars of the working group of the chemical industry. He was active in the didactics of vocational schools as well as general schools.

In 1989 he received the Heinrich Roessler Prize from the Society of German Chemists (GDCh), which also named a prize for chemistry didactics after him. He was an honorary member of the chemistry class in the GDCh, whose Heinrich Roessler Prize he received and where he was on the board from 1983 to 1989. There he was also significantly involved in the Chemistry in Dialogue program. In 2004 he received the Literature Prize of the Association of Austrian Chemistry Teachers.

Schmidkunz was editor of the teaching aids for natural sciences and chemistry (12 volumes) and the series of teaching chemistry (13 volumes). In 1990 he was one of the founding editors of Chemistry Education .
