Career
As a player
Thonhofer began his football career at SV Breitenau, where he played until the age of 21. After moving to DSV Alpine , he played there for three years until he went to SK Sturm Graz . There he stayed for eleven years (temporarily as team captain) before ending his active career at Kapfenberger SV .
As a trainer
After a short break, Thonhofer worked as an assistant coach at DSV Leoben , where he became head coach after six years. In 2006 he became coach of the Regionalliga Mitte club SV Bad Aussee and with whom he was promoted to the Red Zac First League in the first season . After it did not go as desired there and the club did not get past the bottom of the table, his contract was terminated on April 11, 2008 by mutual agreement. For the 2008/2009 season he took over the Regionalliga Ost club FC Waidhofen / Ybbs . With the Ybbstalern he reached fifth place in the table in the Regionalliga Ost and set a new club record with 53 points. From July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2012, Heinz Thonhofer was in charge of the traditional South Styrian club SVL Flavia Solva . From the 2012/2013 season until the end of the 2016/17 season he was head coach of SKU Amstetten in the Regionalliga Ost. On September 2, 2017, Thonhofer took over the coaching position at SV Frohnleiten, with whom he had to relegate from the Styrian league (fifth level) at the end of the 2017/18 season.
