Hel was a Swedish Viking rock band whose name is derived from the Norse goddess Hel .

history

The band Hel was founded by former musicians from the band Völund Smed . Due to various claims that it would be a racist band, they broke up. The band Hel continued the musical concept of Völund Smeds with the difference that the vocals were now taken over by two women. The band released four albums on Ultima Thule Records and was featured on numerous Viking rock samplers. After the bomb attack on Ultima Thules Studio Valhalla , Hel and Ultima Thule released the CD Genom eld och askan ( German : Through fire and ashes ). At the end of 2004 / beginning of 2005 the band was finally dissolved again in order to act again as Völund Smed in the old line-up.

Stylistic features

Musical characteristics

Just like their predecessors from Völund Smed, the band can be assigned to Viking rock. The distinctive two-part female vocals set the band apart from the other Viking rock bands. Hel combines musical elements of metal and punk . Most of the songs are characterized by fast drumming and simple, but very catchy melodies. There are also some soulful ballads that are accompanied by acoustic guitars. In addition to the classical instruments, the violin is used as an accompanying instrument in some of the songs . This was brought in briefly by Cia Hedmark, who had recently joined the band Otyg .

Textual features

According to the volume, the lyrics are about life, death, morals and ethics. But the thoughts they have about Swedish society are also addressed in some of the songs. Both positive and negative things are mentioned (e.g. politicians hiding from the real problems). However, many lyrics are written like fairy tales or legends .
