Völund Smed is a Swedish viking rock - band , whose names from the blacksmith Wieland from the Norse mythology is derived. The band is assigned a right-wing extremist sentiment, as a former member played in the right-wing rock band Pluton Svea and there are various contacts with the right-wing extremist scene. However, the band denies this allegation.

history

The band Völund Smed was founded in autumn 1993 by Esa Rosenström, Piere Karlsson, Stefan Johansson and Mikael. Through their contact with Ragnarock Records, the band developed very quickly. However, through their association with this label, rumors arose that Völund Smed would be a racist band . The band assures, however, that none of its members was or is racist or National Socialist . However, since Esa could not tolerate these rumors, he eventually left the band and Völund Smed broke up. However , the musical concept was continued by some members under the name Hel . However, the male vocals have been replaced by two-part female vocals. At the end of 2004 and beginning of 2005, Hel was dissolved after 4 albums and numerous contributions on various samplers . In 2004 the members of Völund Smed and Hel founded the band Vargflock (Eng. 'Wolf Pack') as a kind of side project. In the same year the album Stolt så klart was released, on which there is also a cover version of the Völund Smed title Kämpa .

For the Kuggnäs Festival 2005 in Nyköping , the musicians appeared again as surprise guests as Völund Smed and were celebrated by the fans. Due to the successful performance, they decided to continue Völund Smed. Also in 2006 there was an appearance at the festival where the new album was supposed to be presented.

In June 2007 the band announced the departure of Esa Rosenström and Piere Göran Karlsson. Jocke Karlsson, formerly the front man of the right-wing radical band Pluton Svea, and Henke now play in the band as replacements. In 2009 there was an appearance in Schmiedefeld with the right-wing extremist band Endstufe , the Swedish Oi! -Band Battle Scarred and several bands from Saxony-Anhalt .

Jocke Karlsson left the band after a few months, however, in spring 2009 Henke also left the band to devote more time to his solo career. John Andersson took his place as the new drummer, later Jocke Karlsson and Esa Rosenström joined the band again. With this new line-up, the band played a few concerts in Sweden and recorded the CD Tvåhundrafjorton in June 2011 , which was limited to 500 copies and was released at the Kuggnäs Festival in Nyköping at the end of July and only distributed there. At the end of 2012 the new album called Ur askan was released.

In December 2011 Völund Smed caused an uproar because you were voted number 1 in the selection of the top 5 bands in the "Sörmland" area and thus the full length of the song "De Tystas Led" on the Swedish public radio "P4 Sörmland" was played. After the song was played, a debate erupted over the band's political affiliation. The band distanced itself several times, also publicly from the right-wing extremist scene. However, this did not help them run again, as is normal practice. The song was taken off the radio station's program because "Sveriges Radio could not reconcile it with its ethical guidelines".

Currently, Völund Smed is sponsored by far-right clothing brand Erik and Sons .

Stylistic features

Musical characteristics

The music of Völund Smed can be assigned to Viking rock. Musical elements of metal and punk are used. Most of the songs are characterized by fast drumming and simple but very catchy melodies. There are also some soulful ballads that are accompanied by acoustic guitars. When singing, emphasis is placed on catchy choruses and melodic verses. The refrain is often accompanied by "Ohh-Ohh" chants in the 2nd voice. The songs often begin with a short melody played by the electric guitar and accompanied by rhythm guitar, bass and drums. This melody is often repeated as a theme in the song after the chorus. Towards the end of the songs, the chorus is often only accompanied by drums, then drums and bass, and finally by the entire band.

Textual features

Like many other Viking rock bands, Völund Smed have to face the charge of spreading right-wing extremist content in their lyrics . This is additionally fueled by what he said was former right-wing extremist band member Jocke Karlssonn. However, the members deny any right-wing extremist content. Her songs are mostly about the beauty of the Swedish nature and the love for their country. Furthermore, legends of Nordic mythology and events from Swedish history are processed. Socially critical issues and criticism of Swedish politics are also addressed. With a few exceptions, all songs are written in Swedish .
