action

The action takes place during the German-Soviet War in the Ukrainian city of Vinnitsa, which was occupied by the Nazis . During a conversation with his girlfriend Nina, the young major Alexei Fedotow receives a delicate and dangerous assignment from the secret service . As a loyal reconnaissance officer, he is supposed to spy on the German Lieutenant General Kühn, the co-organizer of the Wehrmacht who is in constant contact with Hitler's staff, at the Fuehrer's headquarters in Wolfsschanze , an unknown location that the Soviet reconnaissance suspects is near East Prussian Lötzen . However, his direct superior warns him explicitly about General Erich von Rummelsburg, the head of the military situation center, who is seen as a particularly strong and serious opponent.

The courageous Soviet agent travels to East Prussia as a disguised Swiss business representative under the code name "Heinrich Eckert" and from then on lives with the constant fear of exposure. Nevertheless, after successfully passing the local police check, he contacted the wheelchair-dependent businessman Friedrich Pommer, who urgently needed new capital with his company in order to get to know his son Willi. Willi Pommer is an adjutant to General von Rummelsburg. As a pretense, the scout enters into a business relationship with the Pomeranians, and partner Willi, out of gratitude, elevates him to the rank of German officer with all the associated privileges.

With the help of the German-Ukrainian agent “Captain Bereschnoj”, von Rummelsburg succeeds in smashing a larger group of hostile terrorists and scouts in the special zone around Vinnitsa in the “Adler” company. For tactical reasons, however, he releases three exposed underground fighters, including the highly decorated spy Bereschnoj.

Fedotov found out that that cell had been broken up and contacted his headquarters for help in order to ask for human and financial resources, but the hoped-for reinforcement was intercepted by the German intelligence and imprisoned. Despite adverse circumstances, Fedotov found out about an informer in the Bolshevik underground who was personally chosen by Rummelsburg to subvert the Soviet resistance. Quite on his own he sets out to seek out the three underground fighters who have been spared by Rummelsburg, as he suspects the traitor to be in these ranks. First he checks the impoverished farmer Grigory Leschtschuk, but the innocent man is stabbed to death by the unscrupulous Berezhnoy on behalf of the general in order to isolate the still unknown Soviet scout, which he succeeds. He realizes that his personal situation is getting worse and that he is slowly running the risk of being discovered.

Regardless of personal dangers, Fedotov decides to visit the two remaining freedmen. This is how he gets to the cold-blooded Bereschnoj, whom he unmasked as a traitor and liquidated after a brief examination. Astakhov, the third man, becomes his contact. Shortly thereafter, the Soviet agent learned of the imminent arrival of Kühn, who had been promoted to Commander-in-Chief, who had brought with him an operational plan approved by the Fiihrer for a massive, decisive advance against the Red Army in the south of the front. Thanks to the friendly relationship with Willi Pommer, who puts him on the guest list of his upcoming birthday party, Fedotow gets to know the drunk Kühn. Days later he tried in vain to steal Kühn's secret correspondence, but since his plan failed, he instead kidnapped the astonished German commander-in-chief to Moscow. In the Heimant, Fedotov hands the abducted person over to state power. At the end of the film, the film's celebrated hero hugs his girlfriend Nina.
