Helena Norberg-Hodge

Helena Norberg-Hodge (born February 1946 in Sweden) is a Swedish linguist and environmental activist . She is the founder and director of the International Society for Ecology and Culture (ISEC), a non-profit organization that deals with the protection of biological and cultural diversity on earth. The ISEC runs programs on four continents which serve to strengthen ecological diversity and community, especially in the area of ​​regional food and agriculture.

Live and act

Norberg-Hodge received her education in Sweden, Germany and Austria. She then studied linguistics at the University of London and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , where she did her PhD under Noam Chomsky .

In 1975 she came to Ladakh for the first time as a translator for a documentary film team , whose culture and geography occupied her in the following years. In 1978 she founded the Ladakh project, which she has headed ever since. The project became famous for its pioneering work on sustainable development in the Tibetan highlands. For this, Norberg-Hodge was awarded the Right Livelihood Award in 1986 .

She is co-founder of the International Forum on Globalization , an alliance of 60 leading activists, students, economists, researchers and authors, which aims to stimulate new ways of thinking and to carry out joint activities and public education projects that are intended to be a response to increasing globalization. She also works on the Global Ecovillage Network .

She is one of the leading analysts on the impact of globalization on world cultures. Because she spent her youth / studies in countries like Sweden, Germany, England and the USA, she speaks seven languages. She has lectured at many universities around the world, from the Smithsonian Institute to Harvard and Oxford.

She is the author of numerous books and has also been known since 2012 for the film Die Ökonomie des Glücks .
