Marriage and children

The alliance coat of arms of Count Philip III. and Countess Palatine Helena von Simmern is - due to environmental damage caused by stone in poor condition - above the main entrance of the Marienkirche in Hanau .

They had five children together:

  1. Philipp Ludwig I (November 21, 1553 - February 4, 1580)
  2. Dorothea (February 4, 1556 - September 5, 1638)
  3. Wilhelm Reinhard (born September 28, 1557 in Hanau; † February 17, 1558 in Hanau), buried in the choir of the Marienkirche in Hanau
  4. Johann Philipp (born November 6, 1559; † April 22, 1560), also buried in the choir of the Marienkirche in Hanau
  5. Maria (January 20, 1562 - February 15, 1605), died unmarried.

Widowhood

After the early death of her husband, she initiated proceedings at the Reich Chamber of Commerce to establish guardianship for the heir, Philip Ludwig I, who was still underage. But she herself was not appointed guardian.

She first had her widow's residence in Steinau Castle , and later in Schwarzenfels Castle , where she also died. After her death she was transferred to Hanau in a lead coffin and buried there at the side of her husband in the Marienkirche.
