Helge Peters

Helge Peters (born November 28, 1937 in Lübeck ) is a German sociologist .

Peters studied sociology , economics and public law at the universities of Hamburg, Kiel and Münster. He worked at the Social Research Center at the University of Münster in Dortmund, received his doctorate in 1968 and completed his habilitation in 1971. From 1972 to 1975 he was Professor of Sociology at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main , and from 1975 to 1993 he was Professor of Theories of Deviant Behavior in the department Pedagogy of the University of Oldenburg. Since 1993 Professor of Sociology in the Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute for Sociology, Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg . He retired in 2003 .

His areas of work are: social problems and social control . Peters is one of the founding generation of critical criminology in Germany and, alongside Fritz Sack, is an uncompromising representative of the labeling approach .
