Hellmut Keiter (born February 26, 1940 in Hamburg ; † March 27, 2007 in Essen ) was a German physicist.

Life

After graduating from high school in Wattenscheid in 1959 , Hellmut Keiter studied physics at the University of Göttingen , wrote his diploma thesis in 1964 and obtained his doctorate in theoretical physics in 1966 on the subject of "On the influence of the Coulomb interaction between electrons on the residual resistance in the magnetic field". After completing his doctorate, he became an assistant in Cologne and went to Philadelphia as a postdoc (later to become the Nobel Prize winner JR Schrieffer ). In 1970 he returned to Cologne, completed his habilitation there and became a scientific adviser and professor in Cologne. In 1974 he took up a position at the nuclear research facility in Jülich , and in 1976 he moved to the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig, where he was director and professor. In 1977 he left PTB again, became an honorary professor at the University of Göttingen and accepted a full professorship for theoretical physics at the University of Dortmund , where he worked beyond his retirement until a few months before his death.

In 1999 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society .
