Hellmuth G. Butow

Hellmuth Günther Bütow (born January 24, 1925 in Weitramsdorf ; † September 23, 1990 in Berlin ) was a German sociologist and professor at the Free University of Berlin .

Live and act

Hellmut G. Bütow attended high schools in Simmern (Hunsrück) and Gera and passed the Abitur exam in 1943. He then trained as a pilot at the Air War School in Berlin-Gatow. After the end of the Second World War, he first worked as an assistant director, actor and broadcaster at the Stadttheater Gera , the Schauspielhaus Leipzig and the Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk Leipzig. From the winter semester 1954/55 he studied sociology , history , philosophy , economics and general political science at the Universities of Heidelberg and Berlin , and from 1958 worked as an assistant at the Eastern European Institute at the Free University of Berlin . In 1962 the doctorate followed, in 1970 the habilitation. Since then he has worked in Berlin as a professor of sociology; from 1983 he was Vice President of the Free University of Berlin.
