Hello Neighbor is a survival horror and stealth computer game developed by Dynamic Pixels and published by tinyBuild . The aim of the game is for the player to successfully sneak into the cellar of his neighbor's house in order to discover his secret.

    Gameplay

In Hello Neighbor , the player moves to a new house across the street from a mysterious neighbor who is paranoid and who seems to be hiding a secret.

The player's task is to break into the neighbor's house and solve a series of puzzles to collect the items needed to open the basement. If the player explores the neighbor's house, he must not be spotted by the mysterious neighbor, otherwise he will be hunted and if the player is not quick enough to hide or escape he will be captured by the neighbor. If the player is caught, they will be sent back to their own house and will have to break in again.

The game's artificial intelligence (AI) modifies the neighbor's behavior based on the player's past actions, such as setting traps on paths the player followed in a previous attempt.

The player has four inventory rooms and items of the same type cannot be stacked in the same inventory room.

    action

    Act 1

A boy is playing in the street and suddenly hears a scream from his neighbor's house. The boy wants to investigate more closely and sees that the neighbor has apparently locked someone in his basement. Then the boy sneaks into the neighbour's house, finds the key to the basement and enters. He finds out that the neighbor has converted his cellar into a makeshift underground dungeon, but finds no trace of a prisoner. The boy then runs into the neighbor's arms and is captured.

    Act 2

The boy wakes up and finds himself trapped in the neighbour's cellar. He manages to escape from his cell and reach the surface, only to find that the neighbor has put up a massive fence around his property to prevent escape. The boy is forced to solve a series of puzzles in order to find a way to escape. As soon as he has crossed the fence, the boy flees back to his house.

If the boy gets caught in the two acts before he can achieve his goals, he will have vivid nightmares about the neighbor's past. In these nightmares it is revealed that the neighbor had a family consisting of wife, son and daughter. However, the woman apparently died in a car accident, the daughter was killed by the son. The neighbor then hid the son to save him trouble.

    Act 3

The boy, now grown up, wakes up in his apartment. He is evicted from his home and decides to return to his family home. He finds his old house in disrepair, while the neighbour's house is just a heap of rubble. While inspecting the ruins, the man is haunted by a dark shadow-like creature and returns to his home, where he falls asleep. The man is quickly awakened by a child's scream and he discovers that the neighbor's house is back, but has now become bigger, more complex and more surreal than before. The man goes to the house and has surreal experiences such as struggling with a giant version of the neighbor and having to protect his younger self from a giant shadow. Eventually the man finds the exit and wakes up to find that the neighbor's house is still in ruins.

It is implied throughout the events of the game that most of Act 3 was a nightmare in the man's mind and his escape from the house meant finally coming to terms with his kidnapping as a boy in the hands of the neighbor.

    Development and publication

The game was released as an alpha version on the Dynamic Pixels website in 2015. It was later released for early access by the Steam Greenlight program, and a Kickstarter campaign was launched to fund further development. The studio then signed a contract with tinyBuild to release the game. The first pre-release version of the game was released in September 2016. Hello Neighbor's second alpha was released shortly thereafter. The game went into beta in August 2017.

The game was released on December 8, 2017 for Microsoft Windows and Xbox One to mixed reviews. Later, on July 26, 2018, the game was no longer limited to Microsoft systems and also appeared on the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 game consoles as well as for mobile devices with Android and IOS operating systems.

The mobile versions of the game are only supported on a limited number of devices and come with a free trial that allows the player to play Act 1 for free and unlock the remaining two acts with one in-game purchase.

A promo mod was released for Halloween 2017 that contained several elements from the indie game Bendy and the Ink Machine . The game was originally set for full release August 29, 2017, but has been postponed until December 8, 2017.

    Extensions

On June 10, 2018 tinyBuild announced the first expansion for Hello Neighbor , which will be titled Secret Neighbor . Secret Neighbor is a multiplayer horror game that takes place between Act 1 and Act 2 of Hello Neighbor . The game follows a group of friends who try to free their friend from the neighbour's basement. However, one of the friends is a neighbor in disguise. The game was released in October 2019.

A prequel called Hello Neighbor: Hide and Seek was announced in August 2018 and released in December of that year. It deals with the events of the neighbor's family that made him a hermit.

The game is described by some critics as an indie survival horror game with comic graphics that scares you because of its speed and uncertainty and reminds you of different horror films. The use of artificial intelligence is also praised, which by adapting to the player ensures more realism and atmosphere. The creative puzzles in the game were also praised.

However, the controls are described as too grainy and the game's incomplete state is criticized. Some critics also criticize too little horror factor, deficiencies in the game physics and inappropriate behavior of the neighbors, which can be easily tricked. The plot is sometimes described as confusing, but also not uninteresting.

Due to the many horror and shock moments in the game, it became an internet phenomenon and spawned numerous videos on YouTube .
