Helly Frauwallner (born October 12, 1958 in Bairisch Kölldorf , Austria ) is an Austrian enduro racer and multiple Austrian motocross state champion .

Life

Frauwallner began his motorsport career in motocross sports in the early 1970s and won the Austrian junior state championship for the first time in 1975 . In 1976 he defended the title. In 1977 he finished fourth in the Austrian 125 cc championship. In 1978 he became Austrian national champion in the class up to 75 cm³. In 1979 he was able to secure the title of Austrian Vice State Champion both in the class up to 125 cm³ and in the class up to 250 cm³. In 1980 he finished third in the 125 cm³ state championship and fourth in the 250 cm³ state championship.

A three-year winning streak in the Austrian 125 cc championship began in 1981. Frauwallner secured first place in the state championship in 1981, 1982 and 1983.

In 1984 Frauwallner won the title of German runner-up in the 125 cm³ class and that of Bavarian champion in the same. In 1985 Frauwallner returned to Austria and was able to win the Austrian 125 cc national championship again. In 1985 he won all 14 championship races. In 1985 he also became the first winner of the international indoor cross in Vienna and set an Austrian long jump record with 40 meters. In 1986 he won the 125 cc state championship for the last time. In 1987 Frauwallner came third at the International Station Cross in India . In 1988 Frauwallner drove international races in Thailand and Malaysia and finished second and third before he retired from active motocross. Frauwallner was able to celebrate almost 300 victories all over the world up to this point.

Northern lights tour

After an 18-year break from active motorsport, Frauwallner and Carinthian Heinz Koller prepared for a very special kind of circumnavigation of the world: In 160 days they circled the globe on the Northern Lights tour - along the northern polar circle . On May 19, 2007, the starting signal was given for this circumnavigation in Feldbach (Southeast Styria) . The route includes parts of Asia , North America and Europe , all the way to Greenland , the largest island in the world. The two largest countries in the world in terms of area, Russia and Canada , were also passed through . The Northern Lights tour took the two pilots over 50,000 km through 18 countries, three continents and all time zones on earth. Extreme temperature differences were experienced not only by the two pilots, but also by their motorcycles, which pushed man and machine to their limits.

Late rally career from 2008

After the Northern Lights Tour, Frauwallner got into rallying in 2008 , started in Bulgaria for the first time and immediately took second place.

Mongol Rally 2008

Despite a fall during the rally in the desert, Helly Frauwallner was the first Austrian to just about win his first international rally in his motorcycle class after 3200 km of steppe and desert against the best Asian rally drivers in Mongolia.

Heros Legend 2009

In 2009 Frauwallner competed in the Heroes Legend rally (route: Paris to Dakar). He and his Austrian teammate, the lawyer Christian Horwath, achieved overall victory in the team classification and second overall in the individual classification. The team “Contiger Rallye Team” drove the original route “Paris-Dakar” of 8,300 km in 17 days: up to 700 km per day.

Raid de Himalaya 2010-2014

In 2010 Frauwallner started the “ Raid de Himalaya ” in India, the highest rally in the world. Here he was eliminated on the second day after a navigation error. Due to the extreme altitude, this rally is considered to be one of the most dangerous in the world and repeatedly forces drivers to end the race prematurely due to lack of oxygen. Unpredictable onset of winter has also resulted in several deaths in the race. A drop-out rate of more than 50% among participants is not unusual. In 2011 Frauwallner started again and was the first Austrian to win this rally.

Moved to Yamaha in 2012

In 2012 Frauwallner switched to Yamaha and was supported by “Yamaha Moto Austria”. He won the Evia rally in Greece and in 2012 came second in the “Raid de Himalaya” in India.

Overall rally victory 2013 in India

On October 4th, 2013 Frauwallner started again in the highest rally in the world. Frauwallner set a record time on the penultimate stage, then even became the overall winner of the 150 participants and also beat all rally cars.

Intercontinental Rally 2015

On January 26, 2015, Frauwallner started as the leader of TEAM AUSTRIA with 11 other rally drivers at the Intercontinental Rally 2015.

Gibraltar Race 2016

In June 2016 Frauwallner started the long-distance rally Gibraltar-Race together with his son Andre and an Austrian support team. The rally started in Athens and passed through 14 different countries with the final destination Gibraltar. Helly Frauwallner won by a large margin over his son Andre (field of participants: 70 participants). In addition, Helly Frauwallner had a message of peace from the Styrian Governor Hermann Schützenhöfer in a peace book in which many celebrities, politicians, fans and drivers registered.

Gibraltar Race 2017

The following year Helly Frauwallner took part again in the Gibraltar Race Rally and won in his motorcycle class and was second overall behind the Englishman Mark Kinnard.
