from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Bolko III. von Münsterberg (sometimes also Bolko II. von Münsterberg , Polish Bolko III Ziębicki ; Czech Boleslav III. Minstrberský ; * between 1344 and 1348; † June 13, 1410 ) was 1358–1410 Duke of Münsterberg and 1404–1406 Governor of Upper Lusatia .

Life

Bolko III. von Münsterberg came from the Silesian branch of the Piasts . His parents were Duke Nikolaus von Münsterberg and Agnes von Lichtenburg ( Anežka z Lichtenburka ; † 1370).

When his father Nicholas died in 1358, Bolko III was. not yet of legal age, which is why he was initially under the tutelage of his mother. From around 1360 he took over the government of the duchy. During his reign, like his two predecessors, he continued to sell out the duchy. After the death of his uncle Bolko II von Schweidnitz in 1368, he tried in vain to get his legacy.

In 1369/1370 Bolko married Euphemia († 1411), a daughter of Duke Boleslaw von Beuthen and Cosel . She had been married to Wenzel von Falkenberg , who died in 1369, in her first marriage since 1364 . By marriage, Bolko came to the city of Gliwice , which was part of Euphemia's inheritance. Due to financial difficulties, he sold Gleiwitz in 1373 to Konrad II von Oels , who in 1379 also acquired Kanth von Bolko. After Bolko sold Strehlen to Teschen in 1385 , only the city and the Weichbild Münsterberg remained in his possession.

Bolko III. was a loyal follower of the Bohemian King Charles IV , at whose court he stayed several times. In 1394 he was arrested together with Charles' son and successor Wenceslaus IV . Presumably because of this, Wenzel gave him the office of judge at the court in 1396–1400. In 1403 he offered himself together with his son Nikolaus († 1405) and the Liegnitz Duke Ruprecht to Archduke Albrecht IV as a hostage in place of King Wenceslas, who was held by him in custody. 1404–1406 he was governor of Upper Lusatia .

Bolko III. died June 13, 1410; his body was buried in the family crypt of the Heinrichau monastery.

Individual evidence

  1. When specifying Bolko III. von Munsterberg the count begins with Bolko I. von Schweidnitz ; occasionally (e.g. in the history of Silesia given ) he is also referred to as Bolko II von Munsterberg. In this case, the Münsterberg dukes are counted with his father.
